What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?

A Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy is sold by private companies and can help pay some of the health care costs that Medicare does not cover such as deductibles, coinsurance and copayments.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside of the United States.   If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy, Medicare will pay its share of the approved amount for your covered health care costs and your Medigap policy pays its share.

This supplemental policy is different from a Medicare Advantage plan. A Medicare Advantage plan is a way to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your original benefits.
